In May 2007, Jimmy & Carrie Lakey made their first trip to Rwanda. They had begun the process of adoption and this would be when they met their son (River) for the first time at an orphanage in the Gikondo District near Kigali. They had seen his photo but this was the first time to meet him in person.
It was on this trip, they were faced with the reality that once their son was at home with them, his earliest friends would still need help. This led to a simple promise. The Lakey's promised to take care of the children who remained in Rwanda. This was the birth of "River's Promise".
It would be September 2008 before River left Rwanda to join his parents, Jimmy & Carrie, in the USA. But "River's Promise" launched following the trip in 2007 and it has been kept now for 10 years.
All of the children in the orphanage have since been placed in adoptive homes in Rwanda and the orphanage is permanently closed. Many of the children are adults now and are doing well. The younger children are doing great and River's Promise stays in contact with them. Every year, Jimmy Lakey delivers a school photo of River to give to his earliest friends. These children know they are not forgotten.
The Lakey's made a promise to their son & they're not breaking it! Thanks to everyone who helps us keep "River's Promise".
